ABSTRACT
Ovarian cancer represents the principal cause of death in gynecologic cancer. In 2004 25,580 new cases were detected and 16,090 women died for this reason.
Objective: The objective of this study was to determinate if the smoking cigarette is associated with epithelial ovarian cancer.
Material and methods: We realized a case control study at the ABC Medical Center from January 1st 1992 to December 31, 2002. We enrolled 47 cases considered with diagnosis of epithelial ovarian cancer. To determinate the association between epithelial ovarian cancer and smoking cigarette, we did the χ
2 statistic technique and to compare means we did independent samples t test.
Results: We obtained a χ
2 value of 4.24, with p value statistic significance (p ‹ 0.05), odds ratio of 2.976 IC of 95%, and standard deviation of 1.149-7.73.
Conclusion: We conclude that there is an association between the epithelial ovarian cancer and smoking cigarette.
