ABSTRACT
Epidemiologic and clinicopathologic features of malignant melanoma in 424 patients (184 males, 240 females) between 1981 and 2003 were investigated. The total number of patients was divided in two age groups ‹ 30 years (nº 39) and ≥ 30 years (nº 385), and we realized a comparative study between groups both. The female sex was the most frequent and the predominant sites were back and legs. Hands and feets were not registered in patients aged ‹ 30 years. In both groups, superficial spreading melanoma were the most frequent forms and the acral lentiginous melanoma did not occur in patients aged ‹ 30 years. The median of thickness was 2.83 mm. The thicker melanomas were registered mainly in patients aged ≥ 30 years. Ulceration and regression were not frequent. The overall 5-year survival was 66% and there was no detectable survival difference between groups both.
