ABSTRACT
Objectives: To characterize patients diagnosed with gastritis from the clinical, epidemiological, endoscopic, pathological
and microbiological point of view.
Materials and Methods: Cross-sectional descriptive study, in the 19 April Polyclinic from November 2012 to May 2016,
to 230 patients with digestive symptoms with indication of endoscopy of the upper digestive tract. Two doses of gastric
biopsy punches were taken for urease test and anatomopathological study, and an epidemiological survey was completed.
Results: From the sociodemographic point of view, the female sex predominated (62.6%), the white skin color (62.2%),
the 40-49 age group (24.3%) and the average schooling (50.0%). Clinically, epigastric pain prevailed (64.8%) and
post-pandrial fullness (56.1%). The consumption of coffee (65.7%) and that of soft drinks (63.5%) prevailed from the
epidemiological point of view. Erythematous gastritis (84.8%) and chronic gastritis (80.4%) were of interest in endoscopy
and biopsy, respectively. The majority of patients studied resulted in H. pylori negative (60.9%).
Conclusions: All the aspects taken into account in this research are of particular importance so that the attending
physicians can impose an opportune pharmacological and hygienic treatment to these patients.
