ABSTRACT
Objective: To evaluate the knowledge and perceptions about phytotherapy in professors and students of the Latin American School of Medicine.Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted during the period from September 2014 to July 2015. Questionnaires were applied to basic science teachers and second-year medical students who enrolled in an elective course to determine the knowledge and attitudes towards the use of medicinal plants. Subsequently, the elective course was given whose final evaluation was the oral presentation of an updated bibliographic review on herbal medicine in their respective countries.
Results: In the last five years, 57.40% (31) of teachers used medicinal plants, while 40.74% (22) responded negatively. The main reasons were the non-prescription by doctors in 12.96% (7) and, in the same proportion, doubts about the effectiveness of this type of therapy. In general, less knowledge was reported by teachers about the plants used in the treatment or prevention of cancer. With respect to the knowledge of the students, the best results were obtained in the plants for the digestive system with 64.7% (11), and 100% considered necessary the imparting of contents on phytotherapy in medical universities.
Conclusions: It is necessary to carry out remedial actions on phytotherapy directed to teachers. The methodology used in the elective course improves the knowledge on this subject in the students.
