This article is a review that introduce to the dermatologists the Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), and its physiopathology, as a disease of interest for this medical specialty. The paper also presents the hormonal influences, primary the androgen hormones, and its actions on skin, sebaceous gland and hair follicles that induce the presentation of skin features as greasy skin, acne, hirsutism, androgenetic alopecia and Acanthosis nigricans. Statistically the presence of Hirsutism in PCOS women occurs in 70% of the patients, greasy skin and acne in 30-40% and androgenetic alopecia (8%) and Acanthosis nigricans (5%) in a lower incidence. The article also describe the anatomy and physiopathology of each of these skin features and the laboratory findings, including the ones related with the hormonal disturbances, that can help the dermatologist and the general physician reach the PCOS diagnosis. There are topical, systemic and cosmetic therapeutical purposes that contribute to improve away the skin signs of the PCOS and that correct the basal physiopathologic metabolism of the PCOS patients.
