Level of depression in patients with peritoneal dialysis treatment in a hospital in Minatitlán, Veracruz, Mexico

ABSTRACT
Introduction: Depression is the mental disorder that affects most individuals. A vulnerable group are patients with chronic diseases such as diabetes mellitus and chronic kidney disease, among others.Objective: To describe the level of depression in patients receiving peritoneal dialysis treatment in two types.
Methods: Descriptive cross-sectional study with a sample of 26 patients with peritoneal dialysis treatment. To assess the level of depression the Beck Depression Inventory was applied.
Results: The average age was 55.6 years. There were more women, with 57.7%, and the main marital status was married, with 65.4%. All the patients had depression: 65.4% at minimum level, 19.2% moderate level and 15.4% mild level. No significance was found between the level of depression and the type of peritoneal dialysis.
Conclusions: All the patients with peritoneal dialysis had depression, probably due to the radical change in their environment. The uncertainty of knowing what is going to happen with their life, the limitations from the treatment and the socioeconomic modifications that can be attributed to the adequate treatment of the disease.
