ABSTRACT
Introduction: When defects of the cutaneous covering of thoracic extremity (TE) are present secondary to trauma or to resection of skin lesions, there are, as options of treatment, local and distal flaps rotations, skin grafts or tissue expansions, the latter with the shortcoming that when they are big lesions, near by tissue can not be used, problem that limits its usefulness.Material and methodology: Ten patients were treated for defects of cutaneous covering of different sizes secondary to trauma or resection of skin pathology. In all of them, tissue expansors were used in near by areas and when defects were bigger, expansion of ipsilateral flank and infraumbilical regions were used to create an expanded tissue graft to cover defects as big as the whole arm or forearm.
Results: In every patient an adequate tissue expansion was achieved. Total expansion took place in an average of nine weeks, and was well tolerated in all patients, without limitation of physical activity. In every one of them the totality of the defect was covered.
Discussion: Tissue expansion is the best procedure because the skin covers is insuperable, improving the aesthetic and cosmetic aspect with minimal complications.
