Diabetic Neuropathy: Prevalence, Risk Factors and Quality of Life in Patients from Primary Care

ABSTRACT

Objective: To determine diabetic neuropathy prevalence, to identify the associated risk factors and relate them to life quality Methods: Descriptive, cross-sectional and analytic study, with patients from diabetes module of a Family Medicine Unit in Mexico City. The diagnosis was made by monofilament and DN-4 questionnaire. SF-36 test for life quality was applied. To related variables, Independent samples of Student t-test were used, Mann Whitney U and χ2 for independence. Significance level 0.05. Statistical program SPSS V 22. Results: 97 patients with an average age of 60.89 were included, 30 patients (30.9%) were identified with diabetic neuropathy by physical examination, 22 patients (22.7%) by DN-4 questionnaire and 19 (19.5%) to both diagnoses. A relation between neuropathy and life quality was found both questionnaire as well as the two diagnostic forms together. Conclusions: We agree with the majority of authors that the presence of neuropathy is associated with glycemic decontrol, and that complication, is one of the factors that affects the quality of life of the diabetic.
