ABSTRACT
The Conjunctival and Corneal Intraepithelial Neoplasia (CCIN) represents the most frequent non-pigmented
malignant tumor of the ocular surface (33.4%), whose risk factor include U-V light, petroleum products or tobacco
smoke exposure, use of contact lenses, viral infections, immunodeficiency, etc.
Usually, CCIN is presented in advanced age (sixties and seventies decade of life), and is not very common in children.
CCIN is a slowly progressive lesion, with low malignant potential, with less than 1% of metastases incidence.
The most used therapeutic approach is the surgical excision of the lesion with the use of topical chemotherapy or
cryotherapy, however in the last decade, several primary treatment protocols have been developed with topical
chemotherapy, using Mitomycin C (MMC), 5 -Fluorouracil (5-FU) and Interferon alfa-2b (INF-2b), getting excellent
results, that give the option to a new approach and a decrease in invasive procedures and recurrence rates of the
condition.
The objective of this review is to provide more information for doctors and ophthalmologist about this disease and
emphasize in new diagnostic options and different treatments to incorporate them into the regular practice.
