ABSTRACT
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune pathology of unknown etiology in which the abnormal production of autoantibodies, the deposition of immune complexes, among other factors causes a wide range of manifestations and multiple complications. In the absence of a totally specific examination for this pathology different biomarkers are used as clinical and therapeutic support. Biomarkers can help predict the development of a disease since they have been associated with the activity, evolution and treatment of a certain disease. Since alfa-klotho (α-Kl) has been implicated in different processes including inflammation, the possibility of the α-KI fulfilling the role of a new potential biomarker in SLE is under consideration.
