ABSTRACT
Method. Patients with vertigo and without history or otoneurologic findings of vertebrobasilar
insufficiency were evaluated. They underwent transcranial Doppler ultrasound to evaluate carotid
and vertebrobasilar circulation.
Results. We studied 10 patients aged 43 to 78 years (eight females and two males). Clinical history and otoneurologic evaluation didn’t show any sign or symptom of vertebrobasilar insufficiency (IVB). Ultrasound was used to evaluate the vertebral and carotid system hemodinamically. Abnormalities were found in positive in 80% of the patients, 50% were referred as IVB, 20% as carotid stenosis, and 10% as minimal aterosclerotic disease. The diagnosis could not be performed in 20% of the patients.
Discussion. Doppler ultrasound, used to evaluate the vertebrobasilar system, is a non-invasive method that helps in the differential diagnosis or vascular induced vertigo from that other origin.
