ABSTRACT
Lipid droplets are dynamic organelles, conserved in the archaea, bacteria and eukarya domains, that participate in the lipidic homeostasis of the cells; however, an imbalance in its regulatory mechanisms promotes diseases such as type 2 diabetes, obesity, hyperlipidemia and hepatic steatosis. This review briefly describes the role of lipid droplets in the development of these human pathologies and their applications in biotechnology.
