ABSTRACT
The measurement of the violence of young couples, in various countries, has provided confusing, contradictory and difficult to compare data. The problem is due to lack of consensus on the definition of violence, the range of use of instruments that lack of reliability and validity (Glass, Freland, Campbell, Yonas, Sharp y Kub, 2003, Grumbaum, Kann, Kinchen, Williams Ross, Lowry y Kolbel, 2002). The problem is not taken into account the meaning that respondents give to the concept of dating violence and acts that are part of it to build instruments with greater internal reliability. The aim of this study was to determine the significance of physical and sexual violence in university students through the natural semantic networks. 225 technical professional level students (144 women and 81 men) was applied. It is found that women associate physical and sexual violence to power and control. Males physical violence associated with aggression and sexual violence as a way that undermines their gender identity. Defining generated using gender to develop tools for measuring and evaluating violence in young couples is suggested.
