ABSTRACT
Lactose is the main carbohydrate for infant nutrition, and represents the principal source of calcium during infancy and adolescence. It has a well known prebiotic effect and is an important stimuli for the gastrointestinal microbiota.
Lactose ingestion in certain susceptible individuals can cause abdominal symptoms that are variable, depending of the group of age, the amount of lactose consumed and the degree of lactase deficiency. There are myths about lactose intolerance, that sometimes require unnecessary dietary restriction of milk and dairy-product for long periods of time, that has consequences for bone health.
