ABSTRACT
Soft-tissue sarcomas comprehend a heterogenic group of malignant tumors of mesenchymal and neuroectodermic origin. They correspond to approximately 1% of all malignant tumors in adults; half of them occur in the thoracic and pelvic extremities. For many years, most extremity sarcomas were approached by amputation. Multimodality approaches offered the potential for improved local control with less radical operations buy awaited the demonstration that other treatment modalities were active in sarcomas; consisting of wide local excision followed by radiation and systemic chemotherapy was equivalent to radical amputation for high grade extremity sarcomas. These treatments control the local tumor in 80-95% of cases, and most patients treated with conservative procedures enjoy good extremity function. Patient with high grade sarcomas that are > 5 cm, however, are at significant risk of treatment failure and ultimately death from metastatic disease. The chemotherapy has been used in an attempt to improve the outcome; however there are not conclusive results. This study was made to know the experience in the treatment of soft tissue sarcomas of the extremities in the Oncology Unit of the General Hospital of Mexico.
