ABSTRACT
Eosinophilic esophagitis is a condition that is found with increasing frequency in the population. Much of its diagnosis, pathophysiology and treatment are still unknown. Its diagnosis is made with an esophageal biopsy, showing 3-10 intraepithelial eosinophils per high power field. This definition is not widely accepted and the number of eosinophils needed to make the diagnosis varied in different studies. Multiple studies have described potential clinical associations with allergic diseases and it is more frequently encountered in the pediatric population. We present the case of a 56-year-old male with a history of repetitive esophagitis, with poor response to conventional treatment. The objective of this paper is to acquaint the doctor with its presentation and emphasize the importance of considering this disease as a differential diagnosis in adult patients with symptoms of reflux that is unresponsive to conventional therapy. We discuss the pathophysiology, endoscopic findings, laboratory, and the main differences in management of pediatric and adult patients.
