ABSTRACT
Introduction: Non melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) is the most frequent neoplasia worldwide. However, it is included only in a few cancer registries, thus reporting its magnitude becomes relevant.
Objective: To determine epidemiological distribution of NMSC in the population of Clínica Universitaria Reina Fabiola in a five year period.
Material and methods: Retrospective, descriptive study with non probabilistic sampling design, including the population of the Dermatology Department with histopathology for basal cell carcinoma (BCC) or squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) during 2010-2014. Descriptive and inferential statistics were performed on sex, age, year of diagnosis and histological type of BCC.
Results: 257 samples were obtained (88% BCC, 12% SCC), 33 in 2010, increasing to 74 in 2014, 44.4% patients were women and 55.6% were men. There was no significant predominance for gender in SCC, while men prevailed in BCC (p ‹ 0.01). SCC was more prevalent at advanced age (older than 70 years old) with 67% (p ‹ 0.01). Frequent anatomic distribution for BCC was head and neck 63.3% and trunk 25.2% (p ‹ 0.01), while for SCC head and neck represented 64.5% and inferior limbs 12.9% (p ‹ 0.01). Solid nodular was the most frequent histological type of BCC with 66.8%.
Conclusion: In the population of this study, NMSC has annual increase with preference for men, advanced age and photo-exposed areas.
