ABSTRACT
Introduction: nausea and vomiting postoperative cause discomfort and dissatisfaction, they increase the need of care and imply an additional risk for the patient. Objective: to determine the incidence of nausea and vomiting postoperative in patients in which the elective general anesthesia is applied at “Arnaldo Milián Castro” Hospital. Method: a descriptive, cross-sectional observational study was carried out from January 2013 to December 2014. The following variables were evaluated: gender, age, body mass index, smoking habit, history of postoperative nausea and vomiting, classification of the American Society of Anesthesiologist, anesthetic technique and anesthetic agents employed, type of operative surgical intervention, hospital stay, surgical site approach, nasogastric tube use, surgical time and appearance of vomiting preceded by nausea in the first 24 hours postoperatively. Results: the incidence was 15,4%, with predominance in women, nonsmokers, those with a history of postoperative motion sickness and nausea and vomiting, and when thiopental, inhalation agents and postoperative opioids were used. According to the type of surgical intervention was more frequent in the gynecological, conventional, non ambulatory and with surgical time greater than one hour. Conclusions: the incidence of nausea and vomiting postoperative was low. The increase in the number of risk factors was associated with an increase in risk.REFERENCES
