Resignifying of masculinity. Violence towards men: an analysis from gender theory

ABSTRACT
The present article discusses two life stories analyzed from a phenomenological approach in order to investigate how participants re-signify and represent their manhood when they are the ones living domestic violence exercised by their wives. It is based on the theory of masculinity, understanding that to "be a man" as a process that occurs over time and in relation to others. The data show that there is a strong attachment to patriarchal values incorporated into the gender habitus that impede to explain the gender violence that men living at their home. In such a situation the participants refer to them as "less men" for failure to comply with the expectation of society and transgress the ideals of masculine hegemony. Finally, the work contributes to focus on man as a subject of study from a nontraditional view, from the viewpoint of those are living the effects of domestic violence
