Acute renal failure in critical ill patients

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Acute Renal Failure (ARF) is a frequent complication in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). It is calculated that 30 % of admissions to ICU will be ARF being stay in hospital three times more prolonged, increasing the hospital costs and mortality rate.
Objective: to characterize the patients who presented ARF and its relationship with mortality rate.
Method: a longitudinal, prospective and descriptive trial was carried out according to the behavior of acute renal failure in patients admitted to ICU at "Joaquin Albarrán Dominguez"´s General Teaching Hospital, from September 2015 to August 2016. It studied clinical and epidemical variables, risk factors associated, complications, lab results and relation between Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) classification and mortality rate. It was used an Excel date base to recollect the clinical historical information and it was done a posterior analysis using the Statistic Package for Social Sciences (SPSS).
Results: the incidence of acute renal failure in admitted patients was 2,4 %, predominating the feminine sex (54,5 %) and a middle age of 63 years old. The pre renal causes were more common (66,7 %) as well as a low urine volume was the principal clinical presentation. The mortality rate represented 42,4%.
Conclusions: the most frequent risk factors were associated-diseases, sepsis and dehydration proving the necessity of early vigilance of them.
