ABSTRACT
Balloon mitral valvuloplasty has, over the last 15 years, become an established
interventional procedure for patients with pliable non-calcified mitral
stenosis. In this article we describe the long-term outcome of 100 patients
from our hospital (National Medical Center "20 de Noviembre" ISSSTE, Mexico
City), who were treated with this procedure. Average follow-up was 38.72±22.4
months. The procedure was successful in 83.3% of the patients . After the
procedure, the average valvular area changed from 0.95±0.16 to 1.62±0.24
cm
2 (P < 0.001) and, at the end of the follow-up time, it was 1.57 ± 0.29.
The trans-valvular mean gradient changed from 8.80±3.67 mm Hg to 4.74±1.90
mmHg (P <0.001). Complications occurred in 7.0% of the patients, the most
important one being acute mitral insufficiency due to valvular rupture. No
deaths occurred.
Conclusions: Balloon valvuloplasty is an effective method
in patients with Wilkins score of 8 or less, with minimal risk of complications,
and long lasting results. At the end of the follow-up time, patients
were in NYAH functional class I.
