ABSTRACT
Introduction: The safety of regular plasmapheresis on donor health has been demonstrated; however, it’s possible effect on some hematological variables related to hemoglobin concentration is not very related. Objective: To characterize the evolutionary behavior of hematological variables in plasma donors. Material and methods: Descriptive cross sectional study in 200 plasma donors of the Provincial Blood Bank of Cienfuegos. The concentration of hemoglobin and serum iron, hematocrit and mean corpuscular volume were determined serially. The number of individuals who presented humoral alterations was correlated with variables gender, age, time donating plasma, frequency of donations. Results: The average values of all laboratory determinations showed a tendency to decrease within the normal range. There was slight anemia and latent iron deficiency among donors, more frequent in women, donors older than 44 years, increased frequency of donations and time in the plasma donation program. There were no such low values of mean corpuscular volume. Conclusions: It is necessary to review some technical, methodological and administrative aspects related to productive plasmapheresis, which, as an ethical and safe process, should not lead to changes in the health status of donors.REFERENCES
