ABSTRACT
Tuberculosis is an infectious disease transmitted mainly through airways and considered a public health problem. The spread of
Mycobacterium tuberculosis from highly smear-positive patients is decisive in children infected considered the reservoir of future cases of tuberculosis, so his diagnosis in these patients, it is essential for detection in order to provide the correct treatment and timely. Although there are simple techniques, accurate diagnosis and effective treatment with the diagnosis of tuberculosis in pediatric patients it is difficult. The symptoms, the data found during physical examination are nonspecific and insignificant in the mild and moderate forms of the disease. In this situation, the account information that pediatric patient is limited which makes this be forgotten, for its non-infectious nature, not having been considered or no risk to public health programs. The aim of this work was to determine the presence of BAAR in pediatric patients in orden to confirm the clinical diagnosis. The methodology used was to obtain samples from respiratory, phenotypic determination of
M. tuberculosis (Ziehl-Neelsen, culture in liquid and solid media and biochemical identification) and genotypic determination with the use of chain reaction (PCR). The results obtained were 13.4% for smear positivity, 43% for cultivation and 57% for PCR.
Conclusions: Of the three tests applied smear was the least sensitive and PCR was the highest, but there is little difference from the crop.
