Simulation in neurosurgical training: changing training paradigms in surgical training

ABSTRACT
Training systems in different surgical areas have traditionally been developed to satisfy a hospital care need, which puts in the background the academic training and the development of skills of surgical trainees. This paradigm has evolved given the importance of patient safety and the priority of training competent surgeons. Simulator training has a fundamental role in this setting. There are different types of simulators, all aiming to develop skills and competencies that will enable the specialist to efficiently solve situations that may arise in real scenarios when he or she completes the learning curve, reducing the risks to the patient that the development of this curve implies. In this paper, we present a review of the simulation systems available in neurosurgery, and a proposal for a simulation neurosurgical center that meets the current training needs of competent neurosurgeons.
