ABSTRACT
Parkinson’s disease is characterized by well-recognized motor symptoms including rest tremor, rigidity, bradykinesia, and postural and gait
disturbances. However, the disease is also accompanied by a large number of manifestations called non-motor symptoms. These symptoms include
sleep disorders, autonomic and sensory disturbances, as well as neuropsychiatric symptoms. These non-motor symptoms have clinical relevance as
they impact on the quality of life and patient’s perception of their own health. Moreover, this non-motor complex of the disease may precede the onset
of motor symptoms, providing the opportunity to be used as biomarkers. As a result, it is important to know the diagnostic tools, clinical scales and
studies available for the evaluation of the non-motor symptoms of the disease. Timely detection and proper management are essential for comprehensive
treatment of persons with Parkinson’s disease.
