ABSTRACT
Objective: To analyze the strength of association of the factors involved in early childhood caries.
Materials and methods: Case-control design, from July to December 2010, at Family Medicine Unit 93, East Delegation of Mexico, Mexican Social Security Institute. Oral examination with a flat mirror was performed; 96 children with early childhood caries (ITC) and 96 healthy paired controls were included. The mothers responded to a validated survey to determine the associated factors.
Results: Most frequent and most risk factors were related to cariogenic diet: added sugar in the bottle OR = 16.2, added flavoring OR = 9.9, giving medicine OR = 8.6, and eating sweets OR = 6.3. Incorrect habits showed lower strength of association: sleeping with the bottle in the mouth OR = 3.3, using a cup with a straw OR = 2.9, and using a bottle OR = 2.6. It was protective to brush the teeth OR = 0.2, drink liquids from a glass OR = 0.5, and drink plain water OR = 0.5. These variables were maintained in the multivariate model.
Conclusions: When determining the strength of association of each factor involved with ITC, this can contribute to deepening knowledge and can aid in the planning of preventive strategies.
