ABSTRACT
Introduction: Cardiovascular diseases continue to be the leading cause of death in Cuba, to predict the likelihood of suffering from them, different tables have been proposed, including those of Gaziano.
Objective: To determine the levels of global cardiovascular risk in the population of the municipality Colón, Matanzas, year 1999.
Method: Cross-sectional descriptive study. Universe: 21 462 individuals between 35 and 74 years of age randomly selected in the study "Tobacco or Health". Sample: 18 159 people. Variables: age, sex, systolic blood pressure, smoking, obesity, diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease. Individuals were classified into Global Cardiovascular Risk according to original and modified Gazian risk charts. Percentages and 95% CI were calculated; To evaluate the relationship between qualitative variables, independence test and significance level of 95% were used.
Results: Predominated age group of 35-44 followed by 45-64 age group, females were more represented than males 26.5% of individuals classified at "very low" risk; 12.2% in "high" risk and 5% in "very high risk". The 17.9% classified in high risk level: in men 25.4% and in women 12.0%. The increase in risk was proportional to age.
Conclusions: The male sex and the increase of the age are factors that influence the increase of Global Cardiovascular Risk. The levels of moderate and high risk determined by Gaziano tables in this population were higher than in other studies using other tables, which could underestimate the categories of greater risk in Cuba.
