ABSTRACT
Purpose: The results of the Pan-American Diabetic Retinopathy Day («D» day, July 9th 1999) are presented.Method: Diabetic retinopathy was detected in patients without previous ophthalmic evaluation. Retinopathy was graded as 0 (absent), non severe non proliferative (mild and moderate non proliferative, American Academy of Ophthalmology [AAO]), severe non proliferative (severe and very severe, AAO), early proliferative (AAO) and advanced proliferative (high-risk proliferative and advanced proliferative, AAO). Prevalence of retinopathy and macular edema were determined. Retinopathy prevalence was compared in patients with different diabetes duration: ‹ 5 years, ‹ 10 years, › 15 years, › 20 years and › 25 years.
Results: 2305 patients were evaluated in 11 sites; retinopathy was graded in 2303: 1575 (68.4%) didn’t have retinopathy and 728 (31.6%) did. 511 patients (22.2%) had non severe non proliferative retinopathy, 86 (3.7%) severe proliferative, 45 (2%) early proliferative and 86 (3.7%) advanced proliferative. 135 patients had clinically significant macular edema. Retinopathy rate varied from 14.24% in patients with less than 5 years of diabetes to 33.26 in patients with more than 30 years.
Discussion: The prevalence found was similar to that previously reported in open population, macular edema prevalence was greater. Programming periodical detection events may increase treatment opportunities.
