ABSTRACT
Postpartum cardiomyopathy is a potentially life-threatening condition
and can be associated with significant maternal and fetal morbidity and
mortality. Most patients present within the first 4 months after delivery
or in the last month of gestation. Many signs and symptoms of cardiac
failure are often mistaken for pregnancy or peripartum. We use electrocardiogram,
chest radiograph, and significantly elevated
auricular
natriuretic peptide levels to diagnose it although echocardiographic
evaluation is essential to confirm a global left ventricular systolic dys-
function. Treatment is consistent with management of dilated cardiomyopathy
with the exception to avoid use of teratogenic. Nevertheless,
pregnancies subsequent in women who have suffered from the above
mentioned pathology are related to relapses, so it should discourage it
or, if finally there is pregnancy, is necessary to advise precaution and a
specialized units treatment.
