ABSTRACT
Background. Obstructive sleep apnea is a chronic disorder
characterized by diurnal hipersomnolence, snoring,
sleep disorders and hypoxemia with repeated episodes
of partial or total reduction of airflow at the upper
airway structures, which affects more than 50% of male population
over 60 years old.
Objective. To determine the existing correlation between
severity of the obstructive sleep apnea with advanced
age as well as obesity, using nocturne polysomnogram
at the Military Central Hospital in Mexico City.
Method. An observational, transversal and descriptive
study was undergone in a total of 60 snoring adult patients
between 20 and 60 years old who underwent nocturnal polysomnogram.
Two groups were conformed, under and
over 30 years old. Statistical analyses included Mann Whitney
“U” beside percentual values.
Results. Obstructive sleep apnea prevalence was in
this sample of 63% for men, and 37% in women. There
was no significant correlation between respiratory difficult
index an age (p = 0.102) neither with body mass index
(p = 0.075).
Conclusions. Severity of obstructive sleep apnea seems
to be no correlated with advanced age neither with an
increased body mass index according to our results. Polisomnogram
study seems to be needed to every snoring
patient in order to explore this health problem adequately.
