ABSTRACT
Sixty years and older patients with and without glaucoma were studied in order to learn whether arterial hypertension history could
useful to detect glaucoma at primary care.
Method. 64 patients with primary open angle glaucoma (group 1) and 64 without glaucoma, who were 60 or older at initial evaluation were included; history of arterial hypertension rate was identified.
Background. Variables were age, sex, diabetes history, smoking, mean blood pressure, intraocular pressure and optic nerve excavation.
Rate differences were analyzed by χ
2.
Results. Age was 60 to 91 years (average 71.57, SD ± 7.9); 65 patients had arterial hypertension history (50.8%). Mean blood pressure was 96.9 mm Hg (SDE ± 9.6); intraocular pressure and optic nerve excavation were different between groups (p ‹ 0.001). 34 patients in group 1 (53.1%) and 31 in group 2 (48.4%) had a history of arterial hypertension; this history was more common in group 1 (51.3 vs. 48.4%), but no statistical difference was found (p = 0.59).
Discussion. Arterial hypertension history was not statistically higher in patients with glaucoma, which renders it of little value for the early diagnosis of the latter in patients aged 60 or older. Annual evaluation of the optic disc and intraocular pressure is recommended in patients aged 36 and older, regardless of the status of arterial hypertension history.
