ABSTRACT
A prospective, longitudinal, comparative clinically controlled study was carried out in order to compare the changes in the bone
mineral density in 64 women aged 40 or more, with osteopenia or osteoporosis diagnosed by densitometry of energy X-ray absorption
(DEXA), determining the BMD in the right forearm and reporting the values in agreement with the standards of T Score recommended
by the World Health Organization. Two groups were selected at random. The experimental group was constituted by 32 women to
whom a program of controlled physical activity was indicated. Such program was carried out during a period of six months and
consisted of walking sessions (half an hour three times per week) on a treadmill without inclination with an average speed of 3.5
kilometers per hour. The control group was conformed of 32 women who instructed to do their habitual physical activity, that was
classified like slight in 25 cases (less than six hours per week) and moderate in 6 cases (6 to 12 hours per week), without supervision
of the investigators. In the women of group 1, with controlled physical activity, a very significant favorable change in the average of the
initial versus the final T Score (from -2.36 to -1.92, p = 0.0001) was produced. In those of group 2, with no supervised physical activity
the change was also significant (from -2.14 to –1.97, p = 0.028) but smaller than in group one. The BMD had a similar behavior: In
group one it changed from 0.347 to 0.373 (p = 0.0001) and in group 2 it changed from 0.360 to 0.370 (p = 0.019).
