ABSTRACT
Introduction: There are a few studies on the statistical and geographical distribution of higher education institutions with nutrition career in Mexico. Objectives: analyze the distribution patterns of these and associate these with the child nutritional status of the geographical areas of the Mexico’s 2012 National Health and Nutrition Survey. We analyzed these data for the period October 2014-February 2015. Methods: A database of educational institutions that offer nutrition undergraduate degrees was created by a spreadsheet. Subsequently, data were measured, mapped and analyzed vs. the results of child nutritional status by geographical areas used in the survey. Results: 321 campuses of higher education institutions were computed in the 31 states and the Federal District, with an average 10.03 ± 8.29. Forty were public (12.47%); 283 were private (87.53%). The area with more institutions computed was the central one with 132, which had acceptable prevalence rates in the survey. Despite having a considerable amount of computed institutions, the north area seems to be influenced by the American style of life, since it had the highest child overweight and obesity prevalence rates of all areas. A highest geographical concentration of higher education institutions was found in the central and north areas. Conclusions: The central area had a greater number of higher education institutions, which resulted in having stable prevalence rates for imbalances of child nutritional status. The number of higher education institutions with nutrition career is, indeed, a protective factor among the child population.REFERENCES
