ABSTRACT
Introduction: Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is characterized by an excessive production of myeloid cells and their progenitors. Cytoskeletal structural disorders of erythrocytes have been demonstrated with the formation of band 3 aggregates on its surface that have been linked with the anemia that occurs in these patients. Objective: To evaluate the involvement of natural anti-band 3 antibodies in the erythrocyte removal from circulation and its possible relation with anemia.
Method: A follow up study was performed in 16 patients with CML in different clinical stages in which the levels of natural anti band 3 antibodies were determined by an enzyme immunoassay. Blood hemoglobin levels were determined using an automatic analyzer Mindray 3200.
Results: Significant low levels (p ‹ 0.01) of natural band 3 antibodies and hemoglobin were demonstrated in patients samples in chronic phase compared with results obtained during the hematological remission phase were both parameters maintained within normal levels.
Conclusion: The results suggest the possible involvement of natural anti band 3 antibodies in the premature removal of erythrocytes that could explain the anemia observed in patients in the chronic phase of the disease.
