ABSTRACT
We analyzed and compared the effectiveness of n-2-butyl cyanoacrylate to avoid seroma formation in abdominal flap dissection in 40 Wistar adult rats, divided into 4 groups. The abdominal dissection measured 4.5 × 4.5 cm. The difference between each group had to do with the way dead space closed. Four groups were created: Group 1 was the control group, in which the abdominal flap was dissected and the space was closed using conventional procedures. In group 2 the dead space was closed using N-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate, while in group 3 fibrin sealant was used and in group 4, fifteen silk points were given simulating the progressive tension technique. The rats were sacrificed seven days after surgery and the presence of seroma was evaluated as well as surgical time and costs. Group 1 showed a higher probability for seroma formation (p = 0.009). Surgical time was noticeably longer in group 4 when compared with the other groups (p ‹ 0.001). We concluded that the application of N-butyl-2 cyanoacrylate for closing dead space in abdominal flaps is a safe, quick, effective and inexpensive technique when compared with others.
