ABSTRACT
Objectives. To determine the prevalence of depression
in elderly patients and to determine its relationship with socio-
demographic factors, with the presence of chronic illnesses,
social support and their self-perception of health.
Material and methods. It was made a prospective, observational
and descriptive study carried out in a primary
care clinic. One hundred patients among 60 and 80 years
were considered. The Geriatric Depression Scale of Yesavage,
the Social Resources Scale and the Nottingham
Health Profile were applied. To associate the presence of
depression with the variables of study, the statistical tests
of Kruskal-Wallis and one-way analysis of variance were
used. Data were analyzed using the SPSS program version
12.
Results. 17 men and 83 women were included. 56% of
the patients presented hypertension, 50% diabetes mellitus,
42% overweight, and 34% obesity. 66% of the population
showed depression (30% severe depression and
36% moderate depression); 39% of the patients were lightly
or moderately disabled socially. There was significant
association between the presence of depression and the
educational level of the patients, as well as with the presence
of obesity, hypertension and with all the dimensions of
the Profile of Health Nottingham. No association between
depression and social support was found.
Conclusion. Depression is a frequent disorder among
the elderly population with economic, labor and personal
important repercussions, for what is important to carry out
studies of screening and diagnosis in the primary care to
avoid further complications.
