ABSTRACT
Annual increase in the number of patients diagnosed with inflammatory bowel diseases has drawn the attention of scientists and physicians, due to the severe side effects of these conditions and the many times patients need to attend medical consultation, both of which considerably lower their quality of life. The present review deals with the potential of pH-sensitive hydrogels as one of the best therapeutic strategies capable of releasing the bioactive substance in the colon, improving the chances of achieving better results. An analysis is conducted of their hydrophilicity, their capacity to respond to pH variations and the versatility of their preparation methods, reaching micro- and nanoscale sizes. The purpose of the analysis is to show the advantages, limitations, recent advances and future perspectives of their oral administration.
