Could nomogram designed at United States of North America be applied to our population? Kattan nomogram validation

ABSTRACT
Background. The Kattan nomogram is a tool that predicts which patients will have recurrence in the first 5 years after surgery, it was designed in a study in USA. However, there is not until the moment studies that validates this nomogram in our population.
Methods. We considered 77 men with clinically localized prostate cancer undergoing radical prostatectomy in our institution from 1991 since 2004, with sufficient pretreatment information and an antigen follow-up of 60 months. Disease recurrence was defined as two consecutive antigen values 0.4 ng/mL or greater. Kattan nomogram scores were calculated for each patient and statified into six groups for analysis.
Results. Of 77 patients 39 (50.6%) presented recurrence (mean 20.45 months). The Kattan nomogram scores were 13 to 95% (mean 70.66%) the actuarial behavior of the recurrence curve of Kaplan-Meier is similar to the reported in other series that validate this nomogram.
Conclusion. The nomogram tended to overestimate 5-year freedom from recurrence in our patients, nevertheless it is clear that the biochemical recurrence is presented in the different categories according the Kattan nomogran predicts.
