ABSTRACT
Ectopic pregnancy is the most important health problem in women of reproductive age and is the principal cause of death in the first trimester of pregnancy. Its prevalence has increased in the last 15 years. In 2000 were reported 20.7 cases per 1000 pregnancies. The aim of this study is to determinate if cigarette smoking is associated with ectopic pregnancy. We performed a case control study in the ABC Medical Center from February 1 1996 to January 31 2001, enrolled 47 cases and 47 controls. We used the chi-square statistic technique to establish the association. We found that cigarette smoking is a risk factor to ectopic pregnancy (odds ratio 3.8).
