ABSTRACT
Introduction: the occurrence of infancy accidents is generally associated with a broad range of causes, but these factors do not consider the family and its functioning as an element that triggers the occurrence if this phenomenon, and least the possibility for this accidents to constitute a way of child mistreatment. Objective: to investigate how the specialized literature integrates the terms family, accident and child mistreatment.
Methods: review of the literature about the topic published in Cuba and abroad in the period from 2009 to 2014. We took into account the geographical region of Lain America, Europe and Africa. We reviewed the databases PUBMED, SCIELO, REDALYC and INFOMED, from which we took respectively six, fifteen, five and five articles, which produced a result of 31 bibliographical quotations; we also reviewed 12 databases from MedicLatina and 8 from MedLine, whose articles were not relevant for this study. We considered, as inclusion criteria, accident in the child population up to fifteen years of age and functioning of the child's family. We excluded studies about intentional lesions and traffic happenings, for the passive role of the children in the occurrence of these cases.
Conclusions: the terms child mistreatment-family, predisposing or protecting factors and children accidents independent are used independently. We highlight family functioning and their role on accident prevention as an example of child mistreatment, including negligence or abandonment.
