ABSTRACT
Introduction: stroke, ischemic and hemorrhagic have different hospital evolution
and functional sequelae.
Objective: determine hospital stay, discharge status, and functional sequelae in
ischemic stroke and hemorrhagic.
Methods: a prospective cohort study was conducted, including men and women
aged 18 years with a diagnosis of ischemic stroke (Cohort 1) and hemorrhagic
(Cohort 2), who were admitted to the Medical Clinic Service of the National Hospital
(Itauguá, Paraguay). The functional sequelae were evaluated with Barthel Index
applied to high.
Results: the stroke mean age of patients was 60 ± 15 years, with a slight
predominance of males (65 %). Risk factors associated with higher prevalence of
stroke were hypertension and diabetes mellitus. Mortality was higher in
hemorrhagic stroke group than in the ischemic group (24.5 %
vs. 14.6 %). The
mean length of stay was 21 days for ischemic stroke and 27 days in the
hemorrhagic stroke. Barthel index was used to subjects discharged alive and
prevalence of functional independence was detected in hemorrhagic stroke: 67 %
vs. 54 %.
Conclusion: hemorrhagic stroke was characterized by higher mortality and longer
hospital stay. With the Barthel index, greater functional independence in
hemorrhagic stroke was found.
