ABSTRACT
Background. Surgery is the treatment of election for renal tumors, nevertheless is not free of complications.
Objective of the study. Analyze the surgeries made in patients with renal cancer and its complications in the General Hospital of Mexico.
Material and methods. 76 files of patients with renal cancer were reviewed (January 1998 to December 2003). The type of surgery and its complications was determined, classifying the complications with a scale from I to V according to the severity of the complication of the intensity of the required therapy.
Results. Radical nephrectomy is the most frequent surgery (89.5%). Of all the patients 42.10% presented complications, being most frequent injuries to blood vessels (17.10%), renal insufficiency (15.79%) and neumothorax (10.53%). The majority of complications was classified in degrees I (44%) or II (40%). Deaths in trans or post operated did not occur. Of the tumors 80.26% were identified like renal carcinoma of clear cells. The renal carcinomas were classified as T1 in 24.6% of the patients, T2 in 28.9% and T3 in 46.3%.
Conclusions. Most of the complications were of low degree, appearing in tumors with superior T2 stage or more. The use of a standardized system to classify the complications and to assign a severity degree to them provides a useful tool to be able to evaluate the surgical procedure.
