Influence of age in results of the neonatal screening of congenital hypothyroidism, phenylketonuria and galactosemia

ABSTRACT
Due to the early discharge from the hospitals, this article studies the influence of age
on thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), thyroxine (T4), phenylalanine (Phe) and galactose
(Gal) levels in the diagnosis of Congenital Hypothyroidism, Phenylketonuria and Galactosemia.
One thousand thirty eight heel blood samples were collected on filter paper S&S 903. The
population was divided into 5 groups (≤ 24 , 25-48, 49-72, 73-168 y > 168 hours). T4 levels
obtained per group were 326.8, 334.5, 299.2, 299.2 and 210.0 nmol/L. It was observed an
abrupt decrease of TSH concentrations after 24 hours (5.0, 2.3, 1.7, 0.9 y 0.3 mUI/L).
Phe levels were 60.7, 57.9, 57.8, 56.8 and 42.2
mmol/L by increasing age. Gal concentrations
were 0.03 0.04, 0.05, 0.07 and 0.04 mmol/L. T4, TSH, Phe and Gal concentrations levels vary
according to newborn age at the time of sample collection.
