ABSTRACT
Low back pain is a common medical presentation in human being, and also common in sports. In runners, despite of frequent impacts when running, they have the same frequency of low back pain than general population. The main cause for low back pain in runners is strain in lumbar muscles, and most of times can be treated in a nonsurgical fashion. However, in some individuals with previous injuries (disc herniation, spondylolysis, spondylolisthesis, degenerative disc disease, arthritis, etc.), when they run, it might be possible to suffer low back pain, that is why it is necessary to switch the way they are running or jogging, the surface on where they run, as well as the time and the distance they spend running. These changes might be enough for most of people to continue running or jogging. In a handful of cases, intense low back pain with no improvement with conservative treatment, with sciatica o radicular pain, it might be necessary to perform a surgical procedure, according to the specific cause of pain. Most of the patients who underwent a surgical procedure in the lower spine, with a reasonable amount of time, can be running or jogging again, in accordance of their physical capacity.REFERENCES
