ABSTRACT
Chagas’ disease caused by
Trypanosoma cruzi is a major public health problem in the Americas,
this infection is endemic in various rural areas of the Mexican Republic, where 39 triatomines
species have been recorded, but only 20 have been found naturally infected by
T. cruzi, principally
T. barberi, T. dimidiata, Rhodnius prolixus, and T. p. pallidipennis. Also wild reservoirs have
been identified such as opossums
(Didelphis marsupialis), armadillos
(Dasypus novemcinctus), and small rodents. Seroprevalence
of
T. cruzi human infection was higher in Chiapas, Oaxaca, Hidalgo, Veracruz, Yucatán, Jalisco,
San Luis Potosí y Baja California. Chronic chagasic cardiomyopathy appears to be affecting large
number of Mexican patients, but many acute and congenital transmission cases are underreported.
Scientific research production and new publications on Chagas’ disease are rather scarce and the
public health relevance of the disease remains debated, therefore much remains to be done to have
a reliable and complete knowledge on vectors biology and ecology, molecular biology of the parasite,
and different types and prevalence of cardiac and digestive clinical forms. This paper is a short
review on the natural history and laboratory diagnosis of american trypanosomiasis, as well as the
pathogenesis and pathology of the disease, epidemiology and medical treatment.
