ABSTRACT
Introduction: osteimyelitis is an inflammatory process affecting the bone tissue and
presently considered a public health problem due to significant morbidity in the
pediatric population. The universal incidence reate is one or two cases per 5 000
children, being more common in males.
Objective: to present fully updated information about the most fundamental risk
factors and complications of pediatric osteomyelitis in order to guide the health
professional in the clinical decision-taking process.
Methods: a scientific literature review was made in EBSCOhost, Scopus, Springerlink,
Scielo, Lilacs and Medline from Febnruary 22th to December 20th, 2015 using the
search terms: Osteomyelitis and Children not Therapeutics, Osteomyelitis and
Children and Risk Factors, and Osteomyelitis and Children and Complications. A total
of 5 540 references were found of which 98 were finally selected to draft this article.
Development: several conditions should be taken into account as risk factors at the
time of clinically approaching a probable case of osteomyelitis in a pediatric patient,
ranging from history of traumas, history of neonatal complications and previous
infections to active consideration of possible local and systemic complications.
Final considerations: taking these conditions into account will allow optimal
orientation of the clinical decision process since adequate treatment of disease will be
provided as well as support to the reduction of morbidity and mortality indexes.
