The emerging role of nuclear factor erythroid 2 Nrf2 in neuroprotection mediated by astrocytes

ABSTRACT
Astrocytes are a cell type responsible for neuronal protection and
homeostasis of the central nervous system, whose functions have
recently reconsidered, supporting the idea that astrocytes are not only
cells that provide support for other cell types but play functions such
as storage and release of glycogen, control of blood flow, secretion or
absorption of neural transmitters, neuroprotection against reactive
oxygen species, among other functions. Neuroprotection offered
by astrocytes to oxidative stress is mediated by different molecular
pathways, among which the expression of Nrf2 that fosters a release
of antioxidants and detoxifying agents that protect neurons against
various harmful agents.
