ABSTRACT
Our body builds its structures and defines their different roles along a complex growth and development process. The first thousand days of life, from the time of conception to the second birthday, is the single most important phase in our development and which will have the greatest impact on the rest of the individual’s life. During this period, in which the brain grows in size and matures more quickly than at any other time of our lives, adequate nutrition and a favorable environment are paramount in the development of our future abilities to know, analyze and respond to the world around us. That is why we should make our utmost effort to take the necessary actions to create a favorable atmosphere from the preconceptional stage and along the first thousand days of life, taking special care of providing the adequate nutrition and optimal physical and emotional environment for the future children, teenagers and adults. This article describes the concept of the first thousand days of life, its importance to optimal health and the actions to be implemented mainly by pediatricians in order to achieve the best possible development and nutrition in children.
