ABSTRACT
In the history of corneal transplant we can mention names such as Peltier, Muhlabauer, and Fuchs, but it wasn’t until 1905 with Dr. Eduard Konrad Zirm that a new method was consolidated. This method, which is the current base of millions of eye surgery, worldwide gave rise to a new medical era, the era of transplants. With the use of post-mortem donor tissue, Dr. Paton in 1944 created the first eye bank in the USA. In 1950, Dr. Vannas’ punch technique and microsurgery allowed the removal of intact corneal tissue. In the 1970 decade Dr. Stocker talked about the role that corneal endothelium plays in the maintenance of corneal clarity. Because of this, two methods were created for the tissue preservation: hypothermic storage and organ preservation media (M-K, K-sol, Dexsol). Currently, the corneal transplant is homologous, and there are two surgical techniques: the laminar transplant and the total transplant; the corneal edema is avoided when the cornea is immersed in a media with Dextran. The evaluation of the epithelial cells is performed with a specular microscope. With the advance in genetic manipulation, the possibility of developing a gene injection system to the cornea so the recipient’s hystocompatibility genes HLA be blocked and the rejection doesn’t take place is arising, this fact would be in favor of the transplant recipients.
