ABSTRACT
Background: Acute pyelonephritis is a severe form of urinary tract infection. The reported incidence is 7% in girls and 2% in boys during the first 6 years of life. Gram negative bacteria generally produce pyelonephritis, it has an intestinal origin. The importance of treatment of urinary tract infections in childhood is to reduce and prevent complications. The aim of the study was to determine the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of patients admitted in Pediatric Service in ABC Medical Center.
Methods: A review of records from 1 January 2009 to 31 December 2014 of all patients admitted with a diagnosis of pyelonephritis was made, demographic variables, practiced studies, isolates and treatment were described.
Results: A total of 50 patients were included, 41 were women and 9 men, mean age was 4.5 years. In the general examination of urine leukocytosis was detected in 45 patients (90%), positive nitrites in 35 (70%) and bacteuria in 30 (60%). For the final treatment ceftriaxone was used in 66%. Urinary tract ultrasound and follow-up were performed in 20 patients (40%), in 16 patients gammagram and micturition cystogram the were performed.
Conclusion: The data reported in this study is very similar to that of the international literature, however the variety of treatments that favor the possibility of mistakes in the diagnosis or on the follow-up still persist.
